The Four Bathroom Zones
- Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower tray
- Zone 1: Above the bath/shower up to 2.25m height

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The two digits indicate protection against solids (first digit) and liquids (second digit).

- Inside shower enclosure - Zone 0/1, not recommended
- Within arm's reach of bath while standing in it - Safety hazard
Measuring Your Bathroom Zones
Step-by-Step Guide
- Identify Zone 0: The inside of your bath or shower tray
- Measure Zone 1: Draw a vertical line from the edge of Zone 0 up to 2.25m from the floor
- Measure Zone 2: Extend 0.6m (600mm) horizontally from the edge of Zone 1
- Mark outside zones: Everything beyond Zone 2
Special Cases
- Shower without tray: Zone 1 extends 1.2m from the shower head
- Walk-in showers: Zone 1 is the spray area + 0.6m radius around fixed head
- Rooms with no bath/shower: No zones apply (cloakrooms, WCs)

Can I put an electric towel rail next to my shower?
Yes, if it's at least 600mm from the shower edge (putting it in Zone 2 or outside). The towel rail must be IP44 rated or higher. Hardwired installation is recommended.
Do I need an electrician?
For plug-in models outside zones: No, DIY is fine.
For hardwired in Zone 2: Yes, must be Part P compliant, done by qualified electrician.
What if my bathroom is very small?
In small bathrooms, most of the room may be within Zone 2. Choose an IP44+ rated towel rail and consider hardwired installation for maximum safety.
Is IP44 enough for above the bath?
Above the bath is Zone 1, which requires IP44 minimum (IPX5 if there's a shower head). However, we don't recommend towel rails directly above baths - choose a position outside Zone 1 if possible.
